PERSONALITY:

Ethan’s mother always said that growing up with two sisters for siblings really had an effect on the way he turned out, not necessarily in a bad way. She was just perceptive to Ethan’s wonderful ability to tune out things that didn’t matter, like useless fighting and competition, and highlight things that really did. His sisters fought evenly, but he tried to remain a neutral party in both their favor, truly disliking arguing about pointless things, or even very important subjects. He just never was the fierce spirit that Ellie and his other older sister inherited from their mother.

How else would those close to him describe him? Quieter than most, but not shy. He is thoughtful and careful, an advocate of the “less is more” philosophy in being selective with him words. He could talk for hours on interesting subjects, but when it comes to gossip, or things that he really has no opinion on, he finds it much more prudent to simply stay silent. He doesn’t interrupt, a fabulous listener by nature.

Ethan spent most of his life being protected, thus, subconsciously, protects those around him. He is not an overbearing friend to the extent that some Gryffindors take their protection (specifically referencing the Potter and Weasley men and their complete disregard to the fact that their sisters and female cousins will never get married if they are not allowed to date). He is an observer in all things, only stepping in when truly necessary, sometimes not at all. He finds no fun or reason in living someone else’s lives for them.

All in all, Ethan is a very content person. He knows how lucky he is to be attending such a fine school as Hogwarts, to have two older sisters who both love him dearly and two parents who’ve always supported him in his endeavors, and to be a coordinated, intelligent, normal wizard. What he’s found, however, is that the spark he sees in so many others is currently lost for him. Ambivalence has become a major theme in his days, and he’d like that to change. He just needs the right inspiration.

HISTORY:

The last of the Baddock children, third to two sisters before him, Ethan was a welcome blessing to his father, who had always wanted a son. There was a lingering Slytherin, upper-class stigma that just stuck to people like Malcolm, and there was innate pressure to produce an heir, especially due to the growing fortune Demelza’s Quidditch career and Malcolm’s financing company were providing. Being the youngest and the welcome son, Ethan was doted upon by his mother, father, and siblings, but it seemed to take a reverse effect on him compared to other younger, rich children. He was quite out of tune with their good fortune, really preferring to wander around outside all day than play and practice with fancy things.

Raised close with both his siblings, Ethan didn’t like picking one over the other. He had a special relationship with both girls. Their sibling-ties were never exceptionally strong in childhood, as he was very much a loner and a quiet boy compared to the other two, who were their father’s pride and joys. But when Hogwarts came and Ethan was (surprisingly) sorted into Slytherin, he could feel himself growing apart from Ellie, unintentionally. This made him rather upset, as 1. he didn’t like the disdain his overbearing father placed on Ellie when she was sorted and 2. he thought Ellie had alienated him along with his sister and parents. This turned out not to be the case. After a few years at the school, Ethan approached his sister and confessed his worries. The pair have been very close ever since, as Ethan is the close, remaining tie for Ellie to her family.

Besides underlying family troubles, Ethan found that he loved Hogwarts. Throughout his first five years there, he really came into his own. For starters, he actually made some friends. At home he was always quiet and stuck to himself; Hogwarts forced him to socialize, and by his third year he felt perfectly average. He wasn’t seen as weird or a nerd or anything out of the ordinary. He was a friendly, quieter guy with a nice smile and nipping sense of humor. He was never the smartest student in his classes, but he tried hard and passed, even if some of his teachers were a little disappointed with his grades. Potions, charms, and those sorts of classes were never for him…he was always into puzzles. Arithmancy and ancient runes were his best subjects, his inquisitive, quizzical mind perfect for both matters.
